What Does Olaplex Do? Bond Builders vs Conditioners and Hair Masks
How bond-building treatments repair damaged hair, the difference from a conditioner or mask, correct use of Olaplex No.3 and who actually needs it.
Hair strength comes largely from disulfide bonds inside the keratin structure. Bleaching, permanent colour, relaxers and heat break those bonds, which is why damaged hair stretches, snaps and feels gummy when wet.
What a Bond Builder Does
Olaplex No.3 Hair Perfector ($30) contains bis-aminopropyl diglycol dimaleate, a molecule that links broken sulfur bonds back together. It is a chemical repair, not a coating — which is what distinguishes it from a conditioner.
Bond Builder vs Conditioner vs Mask
- Conditioner smooths the cuticle and adds slip for a few washes. Surface level.
- Mask delivers heavier emollients and proteins for temporary strength and softness.
- Bond builder works inside the fibre and its effect accumulates over repeated use.
You still need conditioner: Olaplex No.3 is a pre-shampoo treatment, not a moisturiser, and using it alone often leaves hair feeling dry.
How to Use It Correctly
Apply to damp, towel-dried hair — not soaking wet, which dilutes it, and not dry, which prevents even spread. Leave for at least 10 minutes (longer is fine), then shampoo and condition as normal. Once a week is enough for most people; two or three times a week only for heavily bleached hair.
Who Needs It
Anyone who bleaches, highlights, uses permanent colour, straightens chemically, or heat-styles above 180°C regularly. Virgin, undamaged hair gets little benefit and may feel stiff with overuse — protein and bond overload is a real problem in fine hair.
The Rest of the Shelf
Kérastase Nutritive Bain Satin ($40) is a nourishing shampoo for dry lengths. Moroccanoil Treatment ($50) is a silicone-and-argan finishing oil that smooths frizz and adds shine without repairing anything. A Dyson Airwrap ($599) reduces damage by styling with airflow instead of extreme plate heat. Different jobs — use them together, not as substitutes.
