Degrees You Must Earn
- Bachelor's in Petroleum Engineering (4 years) — the direct route. Top programs: Texas A&M, UT Austin, Colorado School of Mines, Stanford, Heriot-Watt, NTNU, Delft, İTÜ.
- Acceptable alternatives: mechanical, chemical, civil or geological engineering with petroleum electives, often plus a 1-2 year MS in petroleum or reservoir engineering.
- MS or PhD is normal for reservoir simulation and research roles.
Core Coursework
Thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, reservoir engineering, drilling engineering, well logging, geomechanics, production engineering, and increasingly carbon capture and geothermal modelling.
Licensing and Certification
- FE exam → EIT → 4 years experience → PE (Professional Engineer) license in the US; required for roles that sign off designs.
- Offshore safety certifications: BOSIET/HUET, IWCF or IADC well-control certification, offshore medical.
- SPE (Society of Petroleum Engineers) membership and certification for professional standing.
