Eau de Parfum vs Eau de Toilette: What the Concentrations Really Mean

The words on a perfume bottle describe how much fragrance oil it contains in alcohol — which determines longevity, projection and price per millilitre.

The Concentration Ladder

• Eau Fraîche: 1-3% oil, one to two hours.
• Eau de Cologne (EDC): 2-5%, two to three hours. Jo Malone's "colognes" ($165) are lighter, layerable compositions.
• Eau de Toilette (EDT): 5-15%, three to five hours. Brighter opening, lighter trail.
• Eau de Parfum (EDP): 15-20%, five to eight hours. The standard for modern launches: Dior Sauvage EDP ($128), Chanel N°5 EDP ($180).
• Parfum / Extrait: 20-40%, eight hours and beyond, worn close to the skin.

A higher concentration is not automatically "better" — it is denser and often warmer. An EDT can be the right choice in summer or an office.

How a Fragrance Develops

Top notes (citrus, herbs, light fruit) last 15-30 minutes. Heart notes (florals, spices) carry the next two to four hours and define the character. Base notes (woods, musk, amber, vanilla) linger longest. Judge a perfume after four hours on your skin, never on a paper strip in the shop.

Application

Spray on pulse points — wrists, neck, behind the ears, inner elbows — where warmth diffuses the scent. Do not rub the wrists together; friction and heat break the top notes. Moisturised skin holds fragrance far longer than dry skin, so apply an unscented lotion first.

Why Some Cost $340-465

Creed Aventus ($465) and Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge 540 ($340) combine expensive naturals, high extract concentration, small production runs and heavy brand positioning. Materials matter — real oud, orris butter and ambergris substitutes are genuinely costly — but a large part of the price is scarcity and identity. Sample before buying: 2 ml decants cost a few dollars and prevent expensive mistakes.

Storage

Heat, light and air destroy perfume. Keep the bottle in its box, away from the bathroom. Stored well, an EDP stays good for three to five years.
